Metropolis GZM - the first metropolis in Poland

Located in the South of Poland, in the very heart of Upper Silesia and Zagłębie Dąbrowskie, with its capital city ofKatowice, Metropolis GZM encompasses 41 municipalities and communes, is a home to approx. 2.3 million inhabitants and about 240 thousand companies and enterprises producing about 8% of Poland’s GDP. Metropolis GZM is a platform for a wide-ranging cooperation, the aim of which is to improve the quality and comfort of lives of its inhabitants.

The role of Metropolis GZM is to integrate, inspire and coordinate its member municipalities and communes. In legal terms,Metropolis GZM is a metropolitan association, formally created on 1 July 2018, pursuant to the Regulation of the Council of Ministers of 26June 2018 (item 1290), constituting the executive act to the Act of 9 March2017 on the metropolitan association in the Silesian Province (Journal of Laws of 2017, item 730). It polycentric in its character.

In accordance with the Polish Act on the Metropolitan Association in the Silesian Province,

of 9 March 2017(Journal of Laws of 2017, item 730), Metropolis GZM performs the following public tasks:

·      developing spatial order

·      social and economic development of the metropolitan association area

·      planning, coordinating, integrating and developing mass public transport, including transport by road, rail and other rail transport, and sustainable urban mobility

·      metropolitan passenger transport services

·      cooperation in determining the course of national and regional roads within the metropolitan association area

·       promoting metropolitan association and its area

Metropolis GZM consists of the following municipalities and communes:

Będzin, Bieruń, Bobrowniki, Bojszowy, Bytom, Chełm Śląski, Chorzów, Czeladź, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Gierałtowice, Gliwice, Imielin, Katowice, Knurów, Kobiór, Lędziny, ŁaziskaGórne, Mierzęcice, Mikołów, Mysłowice, Ożarowice, Piekary Śląskie, Pilchowice, Psary, Pyskowice, Radzionków, Ruda Śląska, Rudziniec, Siemianowice Śląskie, Siewierz, Sławków, Sosnowiec, Sośnicowice, Świerklaniec, Świętochłowice, Tarnowskie Góry, Tychy, Wojkowice, Wyry, Zabrze and Zbrosławice.
